The Sengstaken-Blakemore tube is used for the life saving treatment of bleeding oesophageal varices. The tube is passed down the oesophagus, the gastric cuff is inflated, the tube is then retracted until the inflated cuff is caught at the gastro-oesophageal junction. The oesophageal cuff is then inflated, arresting the oesophageal haemorrhage.
The high pressure rubber cuff is ideally suited to this task.
